While it’s not really practical to expect to be able to totally eliminate mold from any environment, there are some tips you can follow to reduce the chance of experiencing mold problems in your home.
- Check the exterior of your home regularly for accumulation of ground water.
- Fix leaky faucets, pipes, and appliances immediately. Even a very small leak greatly increases the chance of mold growth.
- If you experience a water leak which saturates carpet, upholstery, or ceiling tiles, have them removed.
- Avoid carpeting high-moisture areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.
- Have your heating and air conditioning system serviced by a professional at least once a year.
- If you notice bubbling or dampness in a wall, have the wall opened to determine the source as that is usually an indication of a water leak. Left unchecked, the areas behind your walls will soon become ideal breeding places for mold.
- Avoid over-watering plants.
- Consider installing a whole-home dehumidifier, especially if you live in a humid climate.
- Choose floor coverings such as tile or laminates instead of carpet when it comes to covering basement floors. Carpets are believed to attract mold, and having them in dark place susceptible to moisture such as a basement may cause problems.
Even if you take all precautions, you may still end up with mold in your home. If you do, contact a company which is experienced in mold remediation.
