Although the 2016 hurricane season has fortunately been a relatively quiet one thus far for Charleston, as many as 43,000 South Carolinians are still dealing with the after-effects of mold removal from last years’s major October flooding. The floods, which were the worst to affect the region in decades, have had a lasting, negative effect on many counties across the state – not just Mt. Pleasant, James Island, Folly Beach, Daniel Island, West Ashley, and other low lying areas of the ‘Lowcountry‘.
According to a report in Columbia’s The State newspaper, many residents have encountered “black, gray, disgusting” mold growth in their bathrooms, bed rooms, kitchens, and other areas of their homes. Not realizing the dangerous repercussions associated with allowing the mold to go untreated, some homeowners have unwittingly allowed the fungus to spread into crawl spaces, ventilation areas, and garages. Not immediately treating the mold has caused health problems (respiratory issues, allergic reactions) in addition to increasing the costs for the eventually required professional treatment.
What to do about mold removal?
FEMA recommends that mold be cleaned up and dried out early on. Attacking the infestation as soon as possible allows home and/or business owners to determine the exact source of the mold, which could be as innocent as a leaky faucet or something far more pressing. A FEMA spokesperson said, “If they let it go and moisture stays in the home and creates a bigger problem 2-3 months after the flooding there isn’t much we can do.” Homeowner’s insurance isn’t a safe fall-back option either. Many policies protect from ‘covered losses’ (such as a overflowing toilet or plumbing issue) they generally do not offer coverage for mold which has grown as a result of flooding.
